Two authorities dig up the roads around Horsham, and knowing which is which saves you searching the wrong website. West Sussex County Council looks after most local roads, from the A24 bypass to the village lanes. National Highways runs the M23, A23 and A27 (who does what). This page covers what is shut in and around the district right now, the long-running A29 problem at Pulborough, and the permanent facts that outlast any one set of cones: key routes, station parking and the park and ride.

Closed now and in the fortnight ahead (checked 20 September 2026)

Pease Pottage is shut to the A264 every night this week, not just the weekend. National Highways has extended the survey work at M23 junction 11. Its closure report now shows the south-west section of Pease Pottage roundabout closed on the nights of Friday 18 September through to Thursday 24 September, with no access to the A264 while it is shut. That is the usual way home to Horsham from the M23 and Gatwick.

  • Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights: 8pm to 6am
  • Monday to Thursday nights: 9pm to 6am
  • No diversion is given in the report

When we last updated this page the report only ran to Sunday 20 September, so four more nights have been added since (National Highways 7-day closure report, last updated 3.30pm on 18 September).

The M23 itself shuts southbound on three nights. The southbound carriageway between junctions 7 and 8 closes for gantry repairs on the nights of Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, 10pm to 5.30am, with a diversion on the National Highways network. Junction 7 is the M25 interchange, so this is the route north out of the district (same report).

Sunday 27 September: the Barns Green races close 14 roads. West Sussex County Council has given notice that it intends to make an order closing the race route to traffic on a rolling basis, operative from 9.30am to 12.45pm. The organisers say road closures start at 9.30am and ask people to arrive early (Run Barns Green). The races raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice and are run entirely by volunteers: the 5K starts at 9.55am, the half marathon at 10.05am, the 10K at 10.25am and the children’s colour run at 12.45pm.

The roads named in the order are:

  • Itchingfield: Chapel Road (5 metres south of Two Mile Ash Road), Sandhills Road (Two Mile Ash Road to Plumtree Cross Lane), Itchingfield Road, Plumtree Cross Lane, Muntham Drive, and Westons Hill from Christ’s Hospital Road south to Plum Tree Cross Lane
  • Itchingfield and Shipley: Trout Lane, from Two Mile Ash Road south to Lackenhurst Lane
  • Itchingfield and Southwater: Christ’s Hospital Road from King Edward Road west to Westons Hill, and Two Mile Ash Road from Sand Hills Lane to Christ’s Hospital Road
  • Shipley: Baker’s Lane, Dragons Green Road, Lackenhurst Lane, and Dragons Lane from Baker’s Lane east to Dragons Green Road
  • Shipley and Southwater: Marlpost Road

Each road shuts for short periods as runners pass, drivers are to be directed round where needed, and pedestrian access to properties stays open. Event queries go to Run Barns Green on 07710 780013 (WSCC notice dated 10 September 2026). Note the wording: the council says it intends to make the order, so it is a stated intention rather than a decision already taken.

In Horsham town.

  • West Parade: still no completion notice, nine days after the due date. West Sussex County Council closed the road on 20 July to rebuild the junction of North Parade, West Parade, Hurst Road and Wimblehurst Road. The works were due to finish on Friday 11 September (WSCC temporary traffic order, dated 16 July 2026). We checked the county council’s news page again on 20 September and there is still nothing. The contractor is Edburton Contractors, on 01903 813665.
  • What the finished junction brings. The county council’s announcement of 7 July lists:
  • two new controlled pedestrian crossings, one replacing the island on Wimblehurst Road and one near Hurst Road
  • a contraflow cycle route on West Parade, with its own signals at the junction
  • modernised traffic signals
  • a new 20mph speed limit on West Parade
  • additional 7.5 tonne weight restrictions on surrounding roads
  • new signs for local cycle routes
  • Waiting is banned on the north side of Greenway, 43 metres either side of the construction access to the Greenway Junior School site, 7am to 5pm daily. That order came into operation on 20 July and is expected to last 18 months (same WSCC notice).
  • On-street parking gets dearer on 1 October. The county council has given notice that it will raise permit, visitor, dispensation and pay-and-display charges across the Horsham and Billingshurst controlled parking zones. Town centre on-street parking goes from £1.90 to £2.10 an hour. The figures are in our report on the new charges.
  • No further event closures until November. The next approved closures in the district are both on Sunday 8 November: a rolling closure through Billingshurst from 10.15am, and Storrington’s Old Mill Drive, High Street and Church Street from 2pm (Horsham District Council road closures, list dated 28 June 2026).

In the villages.

  • Thornscroft, Steyning is closed outside numbers 1 to 4 until Tuesday 22 September, 8am to 4pm daily, while SGN makes new gas main connections. Queries go to SGN on 07816 250709 (WSCC notice dated 27 August 2026).
  • Two permanent speed limit plans are open for comment until 1 October: a 20mph zone across 30 roads on the Wickhurst Green estate in Broadbridge Heath, and a longer 40mph limit on the A283 at Storrington and Washington. Details are in our report on the two proposals.
  • The A29 at Church Hill, Pulborough stays shut, as it has been since the 2022 landslip. The full story is in the A29 section below.

On the motorway and trunk roads. These come from the National Highways closure report, last updated at 3.30pm on Friday 18 September. It covers the nights up to Thursday 24 September. All closures run overnight.

The Clapham to Crossbush closure on the Wednesday night is the one that matters most to drivers from Storrington and Steyning heading for Arundel and Chichester (National Highways 7-day closure report).

Finished since we last checked.

  • Tough Mudder at Faygate, and the A264 right-turn ban and 40mph limit that went with it, ran on 19 and 20 September.
  • The rail closure between Horsham and Barnham on 19 and 20 September is over.
  • The A29 Church Hill inspection closure of Monday 14 September has run.

One new county notice since we last looked. West Sussex published a bundle of Horsham district orders on 10 September, which is where the Barns Green closures, the two speed limit consultations and the 1 October parking rise all come from (Public Notice Portal). Nothing else new closed a road in the district.

Six footpaths and bridleways are shut or about to be, four for broken bridges

These closures do not show up on a roadworks map, but they will end a walk. All six are county council orders, and every one says the same thing: there is no alternative route on the rights of way network.

  • West Grinstead, Public Footpath 1814: closed from 9 September for six months, for 420 metres from its junction with Footpath 1815 eastwards to the Downs Link. Broken bridge (WSCC order dated 3 September 2026).
  • Shipley, Public Footpath 1889: closes from 23 September, for about 175 metres from Footpath 1888 eastwards to Shipley Road. The reason is tree felling and enabling works linked to a planning permission. It lasts six months or until the works are done (same WSCC notice).
  • Shipley, Public Bridleway 1966: closed since 23 August, for 912 metres from the junction with Bridleway 1966_1 south-westwards to Countryman Lane. Broken bridge. The order lasts six months or until the works are done (WSCC order dated 20 August 2026).
  • West Chiltington, Public Footpath 2437: closed from 20 August for six months, for 450 metres from Harborough Hill south-westwards to Monkmead Lane. The reason here is surface erosion (WSCC order dated 20 August 2026).
  • Parham, Public Footpath 2430: closed from 5 August for six months, from the A283 Mare Hill Road southwards to Church Lane. Broken bridge (WSCC order dated 30 July 2026).
  • Itchingfield, Public Footpath 1628_1: closed from 2 July for six months, for 1,190 metres from Bridleway 1630 south-eastwards to the Downs Link. Broken bridge (WSCC order dated 2 July 2026).

On the trains: the coast line closes again on Sunday 27 September

Sunday 27 September: trains from London Victoria end at Arundel. Engineering work closes all lines between Barnham and Arundel or Angmering. Checked against Southern’s own listing on 20 September, it is still on.

  • Buses replace trains between Barnham and Arundel, and between Barnham and Angmering via Ford and Littlehampton.
  • Trains run London Victoria to Arundel, London Victoria or Brighton to Angmering, and Bognor Regis or Barnham to Portsmouth Harbour.
  • No Southern trains run to or from Southampton Central. South Western Railway tickets are accepted between Portsmouth and Southampton at no extra cost.
  • It starts the night before: the 11.16pm London Victoria to Chichester on Saturday 26 September ends at Angmering, with a bus on to Chichester (Southern, 27 September).

Horsham itself keeps its trains that Sunday. The break is south of Pulborough, so it is Arun Valley journeys to Barnham, Bognor and Chichester that turn into a bus.

Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October: no trains into Portsmouth. Engineering work between Cosham and Portsmouth Harbour means buses replace Southern trains between Havant and Portsmouth & Southsea or Portsmouth Harbour all weekend. Southern lists the Horsham to Portsmouth Harbour service among the routes affected (Southern, 3 October).

That same weekend, buses replace trains between Three Bridges and Brighton overnight: from about 1am to 7.15am on the Sunday morning for Southern and Thameslink, and no Gatwick Express at all until 7am on the Sunday, then an amended timetable with longer journey times. If you are catching an early flight on Sunday 4 October, plan for that (Southern, 3 October).

Further ahead, put three dates in the diary. Horsham is on the diversion route when the Brighton Main Line shuts, so the town’s trains get busier rather than cancelled:

  • Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October 2026: no trains between Brighton and Three Bridges. A diverted Southern service runs between Brighton and London Victoria calling at Hove, Shoreham-by-Sea, Worthing, Angmering, Littlehampton, Horsham, Three Bridges, Gatwick Airport, East Croydon and Clapham Junction. Southern advises using that train rather than the replacement buses.
  • Sunday 10 January 2027: no trains between Gatwick Airport and Purley or East Croydon.
  • Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 February 2027: a nine-day closure between Three Bridges and Lewes, Brighton or Hove via Haywards Heath, timed for the half-term holiday (Southern Brighton Main Line engineering work).

The A29 at Pulborough: the district’s longest-running road problem

This is not ordinary roadworks. A landslip on 28 December 2022 shut the A29 Church Hill. The county council’s own page still describes the road as closed between the Church Place and A283 Lower Street junctions, with a signed diversion in place. The council’s geotechnical advice is that it is not safe to reopen to vehicles or pedestrians, and that disturbing the embankment could make the slip worse. Both embankments have moved and worsened since the original closure. The council does not own the land the embankments stand on. That is why the debris is still on the carriageway and why the case went legal.

The council served statutory notices on the landowners in February 2024, requiring tree works. The landowners appealed. At a magistrates’ court hearing on 7 and 8 January 2026 those appeals were dismissed. As of the council’s 10 August 2026 update, there is still no date for a permanent fix (WSCC A29 Pulborough page).

The signed diversion runs the long way round:

  • the A283 through Storrington and Washington
  • the A24 north through Ashington, Shipley and West Grinstead
  • the A272 west through Coolham, Coneyhurst and Billingshurst
  • the A29 south through Adversane

Pedestrians are directed onto signed bridleway and rights of way routes, and the council asks people not to move the barriers.

One change is coming to that stretch. The county council has consulted on permanent speed limits on the A29 and adjoining roads at Coldwaltham, Bury and Fittleworth:

  • 20mph through Coldwaltham village
  • 30mph between Bury Gate and Watersfield
  • 40mph between Coldwaltham and Pulborough

Comments closed on 20 August 2026. A month on, the county council has moved the scheme to its closed TRO consultations list but has not published a decision, and no made order had appeared on the Public Notice Portal when we checked on 20 September (WSCC notice, reference TRO/HOR8015/RC).

Bigger schemes on the horizon

The next generation of works around Horsham will come from development. The West of Ifield scheme on the Crawley border includes a full application for its first-phase roads, the Crawley Western Multi-Modal Corridor with access from Charlwood Road; our Horsham planning news page tracks where it has got to. In Rusper, the 43-home Millfields Farm site comes with a new access on East Street, crossing improvements and a wider 30mph zone. The parish council is still carrying the June 2026 highways agreement notice and no construction date has been published (Rusper Parish Council notice). The Broadbridge Heath junction rebuild, Newbridge roundabout and the downgraded old bypass finished in 2021. Those are the settled state of the west side, not pending work.

The evergreen facts: routes, station parking, park and ride

The key routes. The A24 carries north to south traffic past the town between Dorking and Worthing. The A264 links Horsham to Crawley and M23 junction 11. The A281 threads through the town centre towards Guildford one way and Henfield the other. The A272 crosses the district east to west, and the A29 takes the Billingshurst corridor towards Bognor. When any one of them fails, its traffic lands on the others. That is why one overnight M23 closure can make Roffey busy at midnight.

Station parking. The car park at Horsham station is run by APCOA for Southern, open 24 hours, from £5.10 a day, with five Blue Badge bays, four EV charging spaces and two motorbike spaces. Parking is free for Blue Badge holders, but the car park is ANPR-controlled, so you still have to register the car. The two official sources disagree on size: APCOA lists 185 spaces, National Rail lists 220 (APCOA, National Rail). Hop Oast park and ride. Still running, seven days a week, and cheap. Metrobus routes 23 and 98 serve the site off the B2237 Worthing Road (RH13 0AR), with a £2.70 day ticket valid in both directions for up to five people, or £1.80 singles before 9am Monday to Friday. Concessionary passes are free after 9.30am on weekdays and any time at weekends. The site opens 4am to 9pm daily, the exit stays open 24 hours, and there is a 2-metre height limit. Last buses back from town are 10.12pm on route 23 and 11.42pm on route 98 Monday to Saturday, dropping to 4.34pm and 6.27pm on Sundays (Metrobus). For a Saturday in town it comfortably undercuts the town centre car parks, but check that Sunday finish before you leave the car.

Not after 8pm or 9pm, depending on the night. It runs 8pm to 6am at the weekend and 9pm to 6am on weeknights, and the closure report says there is no access to the A264 while it is shut (National Highways).

Which roads close for the Barns Green races on 27 September?

Fourteen, on a rolling basis between 9.30am and 12.45pm, in Itchingfield, Shipley and Southwater. They include Two Mile Ash Road, Christ’s Hospital Road, Marlpost Road, Trout Lane, Dragons Lane and Lackenhurst Lane. Pedestrian access to homes on those roads stays open (WSCC notice, 10 September 2026).

Is West Parade in Horsham still closed?

The works were due to finish on Friday 11 September 2026. West Sussex County Council closed the road on 20 July to rebuild the junction with North Parade, Hurst Road and Wimblehurst Road. Are there trains from Horsham to the coast at the end of September?

Not past Arundel on Sunday 27 September, when all lines between Barnham and Arundel or Angmering close. Trains from London Victoria terminate at Arundel and buses run on from Barnham. Horsham, Billingshurst and Pulborough keep their trains (Southern).

Is the M23 closed at night this week?

Is the Carfax closed on Friday evenings?

Not any more. The council approved four Friday closures for the Friday Lates events, on 7, 14, 21 and 28 August. The next approved closures in the district are the Billingshurst and Storrington ones on Sunday 8 November (Horsham District Council).

Why is the A29 at Pulborough still shut?

A landslip on 28 December 2022 closed Church Hill, and the council’s geotechnical advice is that it is not safe to reopen. The embankments are on private land and have moved again since. The landowners’ appeals against the council’s tree notices were dismissed at a January 2026 hearing. The council’s 10 August 2026 update still gives no date for a permanent repair (WSCC).
